El Presidente de la Nación Argentina Juan Domingo Perón el día 22 de noviembre de 1949 a través del Decreto 29.337 dispuso la Supresión de Aranceles Universitarios. El Presidente expresaba: «Desde hoy quedan suprimidos los actuales aranceles universitarios en forma tal que la enseñanza sea gratuita y esté al alcance de todos los jóvenes argentinos que anhelan instruirse para el bien del país”.
Pero desde el golpe militar de 1955 y las sucesivas dictaduras, incluyendo la última, el decreto de Perón fue ocultado y desconocido por la mayoría de los académicos, intelectuales y estudiantes que le atribuyeron la gratuidad universitaria a la Reforma de 1918.
Perón expresó: «Desde hoy quedan suprimidos los actuales aranceles universitarios en forma tal que la enseñanza sea absolutamente gratuita y esté al alcance de todos los jóvenes argentinos que anhelan instruirse para el bien del país». Por ello, hoy es el Día Nacional de la Gratuidad de la Enseñanza Universitaria.
