Fontana es una ciudad ubicada en el sudeste de la provincia del Chaco. Se encuentra en el departamento San Fernando, a 5 kilómetros de la capital provincial, con la cual conforma el Gran Resistencia.
Fontana es el apellido de dos hermanos, Pedro y Fernando, quienes crearon la fábrica de tanino alrededor de la cual se desarrolló la localidad.
Por su cercanía a Resistencia, primera colonia de la provincia, los lotes que hoy ocupa Fontana fueron repartidos entre los inmigrantes que habitaron esa colonia en 1878.
Hasta 1931 la zona de Fontana era constituida por varios caseríos dispersos. Ese año la compañía La Forestal compró la taninera de los hermanos Fontana y comenzó la construcción de casas para los trabajadores de la fábrica. Este es el comienzo del pueblo de Fontana, con sus calles y casas agrupadas alrededor de la taninera y el ramal del ferrocarril Santa Fe que ingresaba hasta la fábrica.
El principal acceso vial de Fontana es la avenida Alvear, que la comunica al oeste con la ciudad de Resistencia, al este con la Ruta Nacional 11 y al oeste la une con la localidad de Puerto Tirol. La avenida 25 de Mayo es el otro acceso desde la ciudad de Resistencia, que ingresa al municipio de Puerto Tirol y llega a la Ruta Nacional 16, aunque sin alcanzar el centro de Tirol.
