La ciudad de Tres Isletas está ubicada en el centro-norte de la provincia del Chaco, es cabecera del departamento Maipú y fue fundada el 19 de agosto de 1937 según el decreto número 112.348 firmado por el presidente Agustín P. Justo.

En este lugar se encontraba una laguna de aguas claras, rodeada por tres agrupaciones de árboles muy bien definidas y que comúnmente se denominaban «isletas». Éste era el punto obligatorio de descanso en el largo camino a través de los montes vírgenes y la fuente de donde los hombres y animales reponían energía y saciaban su sed. Por costumbre el lugar comenzó a llamarse «de las tres isletas» y conservó este nombre en su fundación oficial.

Cuando la Comisión de Agrimensores, encabezada por el Ing. Pillado Matheu, fue destinada a practicar la mensura en lotes pastoriles de 10.000 has. en el año 1912, lo hizo acompañada por algunas fuerzas militares de apoyo, en la creencia de que pudieran ser molestados por los aborígenes del lugar. La principal vía de acceso es la Ruta Nacional 95, que la comunica al norte con Zaparinqui y Juan José Castelli, y al sur con Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña y la provincia de Santa Fe.
