Luego de 49 días de gobierno, el presidente de la nación Héctor J. Cámpora y el vicepresidente Vicente Solano Lima presentan sus renuncias ante el Congreso Nacional a fin de que puedan realizarse, por primera vez en 18 años, elecciones auténticamente libres, sin proscripciones de ninguna clase.

Luego de un breve interinato del diputado Raúl Lastiri, yerno de José López Rega llegado a la presidencia provisional, en las elecciones que tuvieron lugar en septiembre de ese año Juan Domingo Perón sería electo por tercera vez a la presidencia con 7.300.000 votos, el 62% del total.
