San Bernardo es una localidad que se encuentra en el centro de la provincia del Chaco y es cabecera del departamento O’Higgins.

Aquí existía una pampa con ñandúes y el pueblo originario mocoví, pobladores de esta región, cazaban estas aves y comían sus huevos. A este lugar se lo denominaba “Pampa del Huevo”.

En 1933, Gonzalo Valentín Pando hizo los planos de un pueblo que en honor a su hermano llevaría el nombre Bernardo. Así, dejó de ser “Pampa del Huevo” para pasar a “San Bernardo”.

El 50% de los suelos de aptitud agrícola está comprendido en la producción de cultivos anuales, mientras que los de aptitud mixta son dedicados a la producción agrícola-ganadera o forestal. Los suelos de aptitud estrictamente ganadera se utilizan en ganadería extensiva y en forestal. Los cultivos de la zona son algodón, soja, girasol y trigo.

San Bernardo es conocido por “La Oma”, un hermoso y emblemático poema cantado, con letra de Daniel Altamirano. El compositor Pedro Favini le puso música de chamamé y en 1977, los «Cuatro de Córdoba»: Víctor Hugo Godoy, Héctor Pacheco, Eduardo Márquez y Américo Albornoz, la estrenaron. Marta Hoffner de Rabe fue “La Oma”, y falleció en noviembre de 1994.
